Golf - a mental game, that is!

Yoda said that or would have if he was a golfer and not a Jedi master. Golf freaks your brain out - if you're hitting it like Tiger one day you'll be hacking it round like a loon the next day as sure as eggs is eggs. There's no rhyme or reason to it - somedays the force will be with you and the next you'll be turned to the dark side. Here's a few ideas however that might aid the high handicapper over the single-figure player ...

  • Don't play par golf - you've got a handicap of 18 therefore you can bogey every single hole and still return a nett score of par. There's no point in trying to bludgeon every shot to try and hit greens in regulation. Your handicap means you can afford to maneouvre the ball around with reasonable shots and then pitch to the green, two putt and take bogey. The low handicappers of this world don't have the same luxury as we lucky guys do - they need pars and birdies all the way round
  • Think positive from the start, don't go to the first tee thinking about any bad shots you hit in your previous round.
  • Don't ever give up. Even if you're three off the tee there's still a possibility of making a good score so keep your chin up, there's a good un.
